== Early life ==
Jillian Schlesinger was born in Los Angeles, CA, grew up in Ossining, New York and Santa Cruz, California. She is the daughter of John Schlesinger, a physicist and professor at University of California Santa Cruz, and Paula Schlesinger, a former teacher and social worker. Jillian attended Santa Cruz High School and Brown University, where she studied linguistic anthropology and creative writing. She grew up in a scientology family and had dreamed of becoming a teacher. She didn't like the life of a scientologist and knew she needed to escape. If she escaped, everyone would disown her but if she stayed, she would continue to live a terrible life. She was also a member of the Sea Organization People who sign contracts to serve the group for billions of years. Schlesinger was a good scientologist and did a lot of work around the country. Sometimes she would work 19 hour days selling scientology books but when she didn't meet her selling goal she would be punished by the church. In 2002, she was transferred to Los Angeles to the church's main punishment facility. She said how much she "didn't like it and when her boss threatened to throw one of Schlesinger's coworkers out the window, Schlesinger tried to intervene and the boss threatened to smash her face".
Later, Schlesinger had seen a magazine in which stated that Leah Remini (a former scientologist) had left the church. As soon as Schlesinger saw this, it gave her the idea to leave the church too. In 2014, Schlesinger decided to leave the church. She planned to take a train to Anaheim, CA where her father was. She surprised him and left the church together. She said in an interview that she just wanted to "start all over"
